For those of you planning to video edit on the new 2020 M1 Macs, the good news is that no matter which model you choose, you're making a great choice. In this video, I put the 8GB RAM M1 MacBook Air to the test against it's more expensive upgrade - the 16GB RAM version. I test many different things on both DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Pro, including render time in h.264 and ProRes, 4K timeline scrubbing, fusion titles and transitions, RAM usage, and more. I found that although theoretically the 16GB RAM version should outperform the 8GB RAM Mac, it was not the case (at least, not yet). Editing software is not optimized or updated enough to take advantage of the extra RAM. There's no guarantee this will happen, but in my opinion it will. MacBook Air M1 für Videoschnitt im Langzeittest Mehr als sechs Monate sind vergangen, seitdem ich euch total enthusiastisch die neuen MacBooks mit M1 Prozessor ans Herz gelegt habe. Was ist jetzt? Mehr als ein halbes Jahr später? Bei einer Beziehung würde man sagen: es ist kompliziert. Faktisch hat dieses MacBook für weniger Geld eine enorme Rechenpower. Doch es ist und bleibt ein Einsteiger-Notebook. Ja, es ist schneller als wahrscheinlich 80 Prozent der Intel-Pedanten, trotzdem ist es relativ einfach, das MacBook M1 an seine Grenzen zu bringen. Und was ihr noch in dem Video erfahrt: für was steht das "M1" des MacBooks? Darüber hat keiner gesprochen. Aus unserer Sicht gibt es nur eine einzige Erklärung. Videoschnitt mit Apple-Software ist ohne Wenn und Aber auf dem MacBook möglich. Selbst mit 4k und 60 Frames stottert oder hängt hier nichts. IMovie und Final Cut machen hier einen mega Job. Apple demonstriert hier ganz deutlich, wo der Vorteil liegt, wenn man Hardware, Betriebssystem und Software aus einer Hand produziert. IMovie und Final Cut sind dermaßen auf dem M1 optimiert, dass keine Wünsche offen bleiben. Hier kann man eine Kaufempfehlung ohne Einschränkungen aussprechen. Adobe Premiere und DaVinci Resolve Zum Erscheinungszeitpunkt des M1 MacBooks waren weder die Adobe Suite noch Resolve für den M1 angepasst. Beide Softwarepakete liefen nur in der Emulation. Sogar beeindruckend gut. Videoschnitt war in allen Auflösungen auf dem MacBook mit 16 GB RAM problemlos möglich. Rendern und Export des fertigen Clips; nun ja, dass war "OK", mehr nicht. Adobe After Effects und DaVinci Resolve Fusion Anders sah es bei der Effekt-Software aus. Verkackt! Das bringt es auf den Punkt. Obwohl Resolve und auch Adobe mittlerweile nativ laufende Software nachgeliefert haben, bleiben beim Effekt- und 3D-Rendern erhebliche Performancewünsche offen. Mit der neusten Version von Resolve 17.3 rendert die Software FullHD mit wahnwitzigen 180 Frames/Sec. Leider nur solange, bis ein Fusion-Clip ansteht. Dann sind es durchaus auch mal nur 0,5 Frames. Mal eben schauen, wie der Effekt aussieht, wird damit zu einer echten Geduldsprobe. Ihr dürft natürlich nicht vergessen, dass wir hier immer noch von einem Einsteiger-Notebook reden. Akkulaufzeit unter Volllast Wenn der Workflow Video und 3D ausklammert, hat man das Gefühl, dass in dem MacBook eine nie leer werdende Antimaterie-Batterie neuester Bauart steckt. Es läuft und läuft und läuft. Mit einer Powerbank, die 15 Watt PD beherrscht, könnt ihr die Laufzeit auf locker 20-25 Stunden ausdehnen. In sechs Monaten ist es uns nicht gelungen, unabsichtlich in Stromnot zu kommen. Zwei bis drei Tage ohne Strom sind wirklich realistisch. Wenn ihr jedoch anfangt, eure Videos zu bearbeiten, zu schneiden und eventuell auch noch ein Color Grading wie verrückt betreibt, dann geht dem Air auch recht zügig die Puste aus. 4-6 Stunden und es japst nach frischen Elektronen. Der Wert liegt natürlich noch weit über dem eines Intel-Notebooks. Hier zeigt sich, wie enorm effizient die CPU und GPU arbeiten. Fazit: Selbst nach einem halben Jahr und einiger Ernüchterung ist das MacBook Air M1 ein absoluter Hammer. Natürlich können spezialisierte Laptops mit dedizierten Grafikkarten hier deutlich mehr Performance liefern. Der Preis wird dann aber auch deutlich über 1200-1500 Euro liegen. Wenn man den Workflow bei der Videobearbeitung ein wenig anpasst, ist aber ein flüssiges Arbeiten locker möglich. Selbst mit leistungshungrigen Programmen wie Premiere, DaVinci, After Effects oder Fusion. Wenn ihr zuerst schneidet, dann die Animation bzw. Fusion-Clips erstellt und im Anschluss das Color Grading drauflegt, ist die Performance ausreichend. Das Rendern der fertigen Clips kann dann ruhig in Abwesenheit oder nachts laufen. Da das Air komplett ohne Lüfter auskommt, könnt ihr das sogar im Schlafzimmer machen. Die 10-15 % mehr Leistung der MacBook Pro Variante dürften nur bei enormer Langzeitlast merkbar sein. Mit Photoshop oder Illustrator bringt ihr das Air jedenfalls nicht aus der Puste. Der limitierende Faktor bei allem ist da eher die SSD. Selbst, die aus unserer Sicht, großzügig gewählte 1 TB-Variante war superschnell voll. Unser Tipp: 512 GB kaufen und eine externe Thunderbolt-Platte. Das dürfte euch langfristig glücklicher machen.
