Soon various foreign personalities (including Leonard Cohen) bought and restored property here, joining prominent Greeks who had long appreciated the island’s charms. Sumptuous mansions and humbler vernacular homes arrayed amphitheatrically around the marble-quayed harbour date from the 18th and 19th centuries, when Hydriot seafaring prowess brought great wealth. Despite its high-profile reputation, and the mid-day arrival of “One-Day Saronic Cruises”, the island remains endearingly time-warped: as a listed architectural reserve, all new construction is banned, and the town remains blissfully free of motor vehicles except for two small fire trucks and a few miniature rubbish trucks – photogenic donkeys (or mules) do most haulage. #hydra #greekislands #exoticgreece

Hydra island is a quaint Greek island located about an hour and a half ferry ride, which makes it a great option for a day trip from Athens. Hydra does not allow cars or motorbikes so you can only get around by walking, donkey or boat. The island is small so this is not an issue and water taxis are available. There is only one sandy beach in Hydra, Mandaraki Bay. You can swim off the rocks as well and there are places all over the island to do this from. At the end of the video I talk about the things I needed to get on the ferry. I now know why I didn't need a test to go back to Athens from Hydra and that is because it is the same regional unit as Athens! Here is the best explanation I can find on ferries/flights to and from the Greek islands. 🤍 An example of the health form you need for the ferry - 🤍 My blog 🤍 Buy me a coffee! 🤍 Support me by becoming a Patron! 🤍 🤍 My Amazon store: 🤍 My Photography and Video Gear Sony A7rII - 🤍 Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f4 lens - 🤍 GoPro Hero 9 - 🤍 External Rode Mic for Sony camera - 🤍 Music from Epidemic Sound - 🤍 Facebook 🤍 Twitter 🤍 Instagram 🤍 Email info🤍agirlandherpassport.com
Hydra is an island of the Argosaronic Sea(Greece). It is a particularly popular destination for foreign tourists as well as Athenians, given its relatively short distance from the capital. It owes its name to the abundant waters that gushed from the rich springs it had in ancient times. It has an important maritime history and tradition. Restored mansions, the old picturesque port with battlements and cannons, museums, monasteries, the naval school, make up the image of the island, which testifies to its important historical importance. During the struggle of the 1821 revolution, Hydra together with Spetses and Psara played an important role, due to the great naval power they possessed. In the Revolution of 1821 Hydra had 186 ships. The city of Hydra, which is also the only city on the island, has been declared a conservation area and wheeled vehicles are prohibited. It is spread over two rocky hills and is bustling with traditional houses with tiled roofs, bright blue doors and windows. Hydra has been one of the favorite destinations of Greek and foreign visitors for decades. There are 300 churches and five monasteries on the island. We took a boat trip from Athens to the Greek island of Hydra for the day, and took a walking tour of the only town on the island to look at the sites and sounds of this glamorous town and the beaches and swimming spots available. The history of the island is narrated during the tour. Located approximately 70km from Athens, and 40km from Nafplio it is easy to visit via boat for a day trip, or a longer break in one of the many hotels. Experience the glamour of the 50's and 60's heydays with a night round the amazing harbour in one of the many bars or restaurants or shopping around the town. Hydra Island Greece, Travel Vlog. In this vlog we will be visiting a magnificent and picturesque Hydra island. Less than two hours from Athens, Hydra island is ideal for a day-trip. I booked my trip to Hydra Island on the website: 🤍 ferryhoper.com The ticket cost 30-35 euro one way. The ferry departs from the port Piraeus. The trip duration from the port Piraeus to Hydra Island is about 1 hour 40 minutes. Hydra is a very romantic place sitting in the middle of the Saronic Gulf, the heart of Hydra beats in the beautiful and cosmopolitan town with the picturesque port. Late singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen bought house here. He was continuously inspired by the Greek island of Hydra throughout his long career. Some of Cohen's most beautiful songs were born here. My friend and I truly enjoyed wondering through the labyrinth of narrow streets with the traditional houses and tavernas. This surely will give the visitor an unforgettable experience. Cars and motor vehicles in general are not allowed. The donkeys and horses are the only choice of transportation if you don't want to walk. You will find plenty of restaurants, cafes and tavernas. We had lunch at Kai Kremmidi micro restaurant which serves Greek souvlaki and gyros. Hydra was a great idea to escape from Athens and spent quality time in a peaceful, quite atmosphere! You can also book a hotel room, stay longer and explore more things in this gorgeous island. After a few hours in Hydra we are heading back to Athens to attend the changing of guard ceremony in Syntagma Square. And later took flight back to Tel Aviv, Israel. .................................................................................. #HydraIsland #Greece #GreekIsland #Travelfluent #TravelVlogger #TravelVlog #ExploreGreece #Athens #SyntagmaSquare #ElAl ................................................................................. Hydra, Greece, is a small island on the edge of Saronic Gulf, two hours by ferry from Athens. Sofia Loren’s 1956 movie propelled Hydra onto the world stage, and it became holiday destination for the rich, and celebrities, and the mass tourists would follow soon. Let's walk around the harbor front to see the beauty of the island and its visitors.
We took the ferry from Athens to Hydra (read: ee-dra) for the day! The ferry was around 2 hours, with the first stop being made at Poros Island. Once we arrived on Hydra, we then took a water taxi for about 25 minutes to Bisti Beach. An informative Hydra Greece travel guide, a charming and chic travel destination close to Athens. Find out more about this peculiar island, where no cars or motorcycles are allowed and the only means of transportation is provided with donkeys and taxi boats. Hydra Island is connected to Athens through fast ferries and it’s just one hour and a half from Piraeus Port. It is a destination that the Greeks love, but it also attracts international tourists who choose this island because of its history, laid back philosophy, architecture and bohemian vibes. Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer, composer, poet and writer relocated on Hydra Island in the 60’s and lived here for 6 years. It seems he had found his inspiration right here, as he became famous after this experience. Also, Hydra was the island of choice for a few movie productions, including Sophia Loren’s “Boy on a Dolphin”. This Hydra mini-documentary was created with my own photos and it is based on my own experience. I loved it here so much! A truly special place on Earth! 👍 If you enjoyed this video, it would mean a lot to me if you’d give it a thumbs up and maybe even share it with your own little world you’re living in. Ex-cons Tim Nolan and Gwen, along with two others, have been kidnapped and shipped to a deserted island, where they will take part in a twisted game run by wealthy entrepreneur Vincent Camden. The captives will be thrown onto the island and hunted down by a group of millionaires, all who have suffered some kind of loss at the hands of an ex-con. This is their retribution. But once on the island, the hunters become the hunted when everyone discovers that it's inhabited by a mythical, ferocious beast. With no way off the island and Camden still in control of the boat, Nolan and Gwen must find a way to defeat the creature and re-capture the ship before they all end up prey to the Hydra. Hydra, or Ydra or Idra, is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Myrtoan Sea and the Argolic Gulf. It is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea (Ὑδρέα, derived from the Greek word for "water"), a reference to the natural springs on the island. There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port" (pop. 1,900 in 2011). It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals. Steep stone streets lead up and outward from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island, are located on these streets. Other small villages or hamlets on the island include Mandraki (pop. 11), Kamini, Vlychos (19), Palamidas, Episkopi, and Molos. Hydra depends on tourism, and Athenians account for a sizable segment of its visitors. High-speed hydrofoils and catamarans from Piraeus, some 69 km away, serve Hydra, stopping first at Poros before going on to Spetses. There is a passenger ferry service providing an alternative to hydrofoils that operates between Hydra Harbour to Metochi on the Peloponnese coast. Many Athenians drive to Metochi, leave their car in the secure car park, and take the 20-minute passenger ferry across to Hydra. Rubbish trucks are the only motor vehicles on the island, since by law, cars and motorcycles are not allowed. Horses, mules and donkeys, and water taxis provide public transportation. The inhabited area, however, is so compact that most people walk everywhere. Hydra benefits from numerous bays and natural harbours, and has a strong maritime culture. The island is a popular yachting destination and is the home of the Kamini Yacht Club, an international yacht club based in the port of Kamini. In 2007, a National Geographic Traveler panel of 522 experts rated Hydra the highest of any Greek island (11th out of 111 islands worldwide) as a unique destination preserving its "integrity of place".

Get a coffee, put your feet up and join me for a walk on Hydra! On Sunday 3rd November 2019, one of the heavenly, sunny, off-season days enticed me out for a walk. I had the good company of Michalis of Pelekanos Construction. We started in Hydra Town and headed up Mialouis Street to Kala Pigadi (Good Well) then up to Kiaffa just below the Ag. Konstandinos Church (Patron Saint of Hydra). From there we took the middle, inland road that goes all the way to Vlychos via the back of Kamini. Wondering which island to visit on a day trip from Athens? Look no further than the beautiful island of Hydra. From the Athens port of Piraeus, we take the ferry on an hour and a half journey across the Aegean Sea to Hydra, an island filled with history, beautiful ocean, narrow cobblestone alleyways, hilltop views, cats, al-fresco Greek dining, water sports, relaxation, and old movie charm. Best of all, the island is traffic-free and does not have any cars. Hydra is rich in history. We visit the island's historic Greek Orthodox churches, then venture to the top of the hills to capture the views. It is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea (Υδρέα, derived from the Greek word for "water"), a reference to the natural springs on the island. There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outward from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island, are located on these streets. Other small villages or hamlets on the island include Mandraki, Kamini, Vlychos, Palamidas, Episkopi, and Molos. Hydra, built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a slope overlooking the Argosaronic gulf, is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Traditional stone mansions, narrow cobblestoned streets, secluded squares and above all the banning of cars and the use of around 500 donkeys as means of public transportation, explain the reason why Hydra preserved its distinctive atmosphere through the passage of time. The island experienced exceptional economic growth in the past thanks to its great naval and commercial activity. The Hydriots contributed significantly also to the 1821 War of Independence as their powerful fleet participated in crucial sea battles. It is rather impressive the fact that such a tiny island is the birthplace of five Greek Prime Ministers! This morning’s Sunday Mass was celebrated by Papa Jorgos at the tiny chapel of Ag. Nicolaos in Pevges on Hydra Island. Many locals made the one hour hike or ride to climb up to this happy valley. The service started at 7am with the congregation arriving in groups until 9ish, having to take turns to enter in order to light their candles. After Holy Communion and the final blessing, everyone was welcomed for coffee, a BBQ lunch and a little later for music, wine and dancing. A really beautiful Hydra morning.
Laughs, teasing between friends and stories from the uni years, all the way until the wedding day. How beautiful it is to have friends who have known you for so long! Who make fun of you and make you laugh. Who remind you not to take yourself too seriously. And then, it’s your turn to remind them stuff they have forgotten about you, maybe even more embarrassing than what they just said in front of everyone – friends and family! Two days in Hydra island where time has stopped in 1890. There are no cars, only horse-drawn carriages and donkeys that carry people and goods in the cobblestoned alleys and sea taxis waiting at the port to take you to a deserted beach where you can enjoy the sun and the sea! Jennifer, the bride. What can I say that Tass hasn’t already said? There’s not much of it in the teaser but wait till you see the film! She has the brightest smile. A smile you can’t resist! Bright-eyed, with a captivating presence and a laugh that could melt even Scrooge’s heart. Tass, the groom. What can I say that his friends haven’t already said? The first time I saw him, he reminded me of Adrien Brody, the actor from The Pianist. But the happy version of him, a man whose life is falling into place perfectly! A man full of life, happy and with a brilliant sense of humor! The first day began with us sailing around the island, enjoying our drinks – getting ready for the wedding day! It was an unforgettable day for all of us, especially for the couple! The ceremony was held on the roof of Hydra’s Historic Archives and Museum, a space that keeps the island’s history alive. Preparations were made in Hydrea hotel where everybody took their time and enjoyed themselves. We had a great time with the friends of the couple until it was time for the ceremony. The groom arrived there by boat while the bride walked around the port accompanied by her bridesmaids. Everything was as it should be. Relaxed. In the moment. As if we were hanging out with friends. Maybe it’s one of the few weddings where the bride actually remembered everything after the ceremony was over (no déjà vu because of stress…). A day I enjoyed laughing with their jokes and their pleasant goofing around, their teasing and their partying! After the ceremony, we all went to Castello for the party. We couldn’t have asked for a better scenery. The setting sun painted the sky red, disappearing slowly into the blue sea. Pure magic. Next morning I woke up with the sweet memory of Jenny and Tassos’ smiles as well as of all their friends and family. It was another wedding where the couple treated me as a friend! I was their friend and they were mine, we kept each other company (of course, they will keep me company for much more than two days since I have the video editing to do!)Thank you for these beautiful moments. I will always go back to these two days when I watch your wedding film. I hope you do too! Wedding Bloomberg | Hydra - Greece Website: 🤍 Follow me on Instagram 🤍
