After I tested the Corsair Vengeance DDR5 sticks featuring SK Hynix memory chips I wanted to compare Samsung and Hynix kits against each other and see which one is the better choice this time around during the early days of DDR5. As we had much better result with Samsung B-die and D-die during the late era of DDR4 and DDR3 I honestly though Samsung would be the king for daily use this time around again, but it seems I was wrong. Samsung memory chips do scale higher with voltage even on air cooling, but in my testing I couldn't go as high on the frequency at all like fully stable in HCI memtest and that means full capacity being tested. 6600 CL36-38 always gave like 2-3 errors during one 100% coverage run, and 6800-7000 started giving tons of errors within a few seconds in the test. So far the best result was at 6400 with CL35 so 35-36-36-34 1T and with 1.435v DRAM Voltage, so that is the maximum value for DDR5 dram voltage within the official voltage spec. With Hynix I had quite good scaling up to 1.45-1.5 for daily configurations, but with these sticks I didn't see much gain between 1.435 and 1.5v for those higher frequencies in HCI memtest. For shorter benchmarks like Geekbench 3 and so on the sticks scaled well up to 1.65-1.7v even on air. Our fellow Team Member Clemens or "CENS" tested 6 different Samsung based kits and only one of them could run the BIOS' 6800 CL32 Samsung profile solid, so that target spec is for sure difficult to reach. I would definitely go for Hynix based sticks this time around based on these results, especially if you are going to buy a 2-slot motherboard aka just one RAM slot per channel. Corsair Vengance are pretty good in terms of value so I can happily recommend those. Good hint for Hynix ICs being used is a very tight CAS (CL) value being used, and then much higher TRCD and TRP, for example 32-39-39 at 6400MT/s. Samsung is usually more flat timing table, like 36-36-36 at 5200-6000. SK hynix, the world's second-largest memory chipmaker, has showcased its progress in chip-stacking technology by unveiling the industry's first NAND chips with more than 300 layers. At the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, California on Wednesday, the South Korean company introduced a sample of its 321-layer four-dimensional NAND flash memory chip a type of non-volatile storage technology that doesn't require power to retain data. The company added it will begin to mass-produce them with a one-terabyte capacity in the first half of 2025. SK hynix says the 321-layer NAND improves productivity by 59 percent compared to its 238-layer predecessor, the industry’s current most-layered and smallest available NAND chips. The company also says that its technological competitiveness accumulated from the 238-layer NAND helped with the development of the new 321-layer product. Following the popularity of ChatGPT, the generative AI market has seen rapid growth, increasing demand for high-performance and high-capacity memory chips that can process more data faster. To meet the trend, SK hynix unveiled its next generation NAND solutions, which include the enterprise solid-state-drives, or SSDs, that support the PCIe Gen5 interface and UFS 4.0. PCle, short for peripheral component interconnect express, is a serial-structured high-speed input and output interface used in the main boards of digital devices. UFS stands for universal flash storage, used for digital cameras, mobile phones and other consumer electronics. The company expects these products to achieve an industry-leading performance to fully meet customer needs with a focus on high performance. After testing those Hynix A-Die DDR5 memory sticks thoroughly which I bought from my team mate CENS a while back, I decided to take my chances and buy a pair of kits myself from TaoBao directly. Also partly to learn how to buy from there, I wanted to see if I could get a better kit by ordering a few sticks from the same source where my other team mate Biso bought his from. Biso managed to showcase DDR5-8400 memtest stable to some degree, and even test stability up to DDR5-8600-8800. Taobao is pretty much a Chinese only market place, with lots of different vendors from various different trades selling their goods in a single large marketplace. Most of the vendors will not ship overseas outside China, so in order to buy anything from there as a foreigner, you need to use a third party agent and there are plenty of them. After discussions I decided to try Superbuy which seemed relatively easy in every way and my overall experience was fantastic. You need to copy the exact URL link of the listing you wish to order, then just select the in-depth details of the part you wish them to buy for you. In my case they managed to obtain the sticks in just a day which was very fast. You have different options of packaging to choose from, and I recommend you purchase some extra package protection if you buy expensive stuff like DDR5 memory. After that you just need to select the shipping method you wish to use, ranging from the cheap air mail envelopes to proper couriers like DHL, FedEx or UPS. I went with DHL as it was ok priced and had the fastest shipping estimate. All in all after shipping cost and value added tax on top, the total cost for the 2 memory kits increased by almost 50% from the original price. Still, I think the price is great if the sticks can match the best retail kits from more notable vendors in performance and liability. South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix is going to buy Intel's NAND memory chip unit in a deal worth about nine billion U.S. dollars. This will make SK number two in the global NAND market. Eum Ji-young has the details. South Korea's second largest chipmaker SK hynix is buying U.S. tech giant Intel's memory chip unit for over nine billion U.S. dollars. SK hynix said on Tuesday that it has signed an all-cash deal which would make it the world's number two NAND flash chip manufacturer with around 20 percent of the market share. NAND flash memory chips are primarily used to store data in devices including smartphones, cameras and data centre servers. The deal includes Intel's solid state drive or SSD business, as well as its NAND memory chip and wafer business and its production facility in Dalian, China. The U.S. semiconductor producer has been looking to get out of the business mainly due to sagging prices for flash memory, so it can focus on its core business of producing non-memory chips. But Intel will be keeping its Optane memory chip division,... a smaller business which taps into advanced technology. The acquisition will happen in stages and the final takeover is expected to be completed in 2025. "Intel's NAND flash technology has been jointly developed by Intel and Micron, so it has outstanding features. When merged with SK hynix's technology, synergy will be created which can propel SK hynix with catch up to its competitor Samsung." He added that the aqcuisition of the factory in Dalian will expand SK hynix's market share in the NAND flash business. SK hynix has been prospering amid COVID-19 as online activity has skyrocketed. It was the fourth-largest NAND flash producer with an 11-point-7 percent market revenue share in the second quarter of 2020 according to market researcher TrendForce while Intel was ranked sixth with about 11-point-5 percent of market revenue share. SK hynix also is the world's second largest supplier in the DRAM business.
