First I present the pulmonic consonants, then the other symbols, the non-pulmonic consonants, the vowels, the diacritics and the suprasegmentals and tones. Please note that I am not a professional linguist. As Owlblocks David poited out, I have forgotten the velar consonants in this video. You can find the velar sounds here: 🤍

This video serves as an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet. It's important because it helps with language learning, and in the mind of world building, it's useful for creating languages. To all you Canadians out there- I apologize for the lack of representation. I love you all the same ❤. The purpose of this video is to help people familiarize themselves with the IPA- something that I personally think more people should do. This doesn't specifically pertain to world building, but hopefully this'll be super useful to anyone who wants to start conlanging. International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) | English Pronunciation

00:24:29
26.08.2014

This lesson explains the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and how it can help with English pronunciation. I start the lesson by defining the International Phonetic Alphabet and showing why it is so useful. The letters of a word don't help us in knowing how to pronounce it because the same letter can have lots of different sounds in different words. For example, the letter "c" has a very different sound in the word "car" compared to the letter "c" in the word "dice". Also the same phonetic sound can be produced by lots of different combinations of letters. The IPA is a system for representing each phonetic sound with a symbol and we use use these symbols to transcribe the correct pronunciation of a word. In the English language, there are 44 phonetic symbols and sounds made up of vowels (short and long), dipthongs and consonant sounds. In this video, I pronounce all of the 44 sounds (actually called phonemes) and show you the corresponding symbol. On top of these standard 44 sounds, American English has a few other specific sounds which I also pronounce and briefly explain. Among the consonant sounds, there is a set of 8 pairs of consonants - In each pair, there is a voiceless consonant (example "p") and its equivalent voiced consonant (example "b"). Each pair's sound (example both the "p" and "b" sound) is produced by exactly the same mouth and tongue position. The only difference is that the voiceless consonant sound (example "p") is produced only by the mouth whereas the voiced consonant sound (example "b") is produced by the vibrations of the vocal cords in the throat. I also present some IPA special characters which are used to represent the start and end of a phonetic transcription, the stressed syllable and the start of a new syllable. The accent in the video is a British English accent but I do try to pronounce the 3-4 American English sounds with an American accent :) IPA RESOURCES: Private English lessons & speaking practice: 🤍 Here is the link to the PDF reference file with all the IPA symbols and example words: 🤍 Free online dictionary with IPA as seen in the video: 🤍 Here are the playlists of my English lessons: Grammar lessons: 🤍 Listening exercises: 🤍 Vocabulary videos: 🤍 Andrew, Crown Academy of English 🤍 🤍 🤍 Photo credits: "All The Best Guys!" Phonetics is the academic study of speech production. You may find it useful if you are studying English as a foreign language who want to improve your pronunciation, which for many students is a challenging area. With phonetics we look at the individual sounds that are used to make up words. We can focus on how each sound is physically formed so you can identify the sounds you are having problems with and focus your study on the individual sounds to improve your pronunciation.

yes, this is a nerdy shitpost also disclaimer: i edited the tier names myself; füttern means to feed in German; my judgement of /ɧ/ does not account for dialectal variation, but rather just the sound in my head when I see this symbol which is in no way representative of common realisations of this phoneme; the vowel in всё is not actually [ɵ] - it's more like the one in тётя ★ ↓ MY LIFE AND CREDITS ↓ ★ this took way longer to edit than expected it's also a lot longer than expected itself?? whack, I hope you enjoy my phonetic struggles ★ ORIGINAL CREDITS ★ 〉Music: Long Stroll by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) 》Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License – 🤍 – 〉Original Tier List: AgmaSchwa 》– 🤍 – 》– 🤍 – ★ PRODUCTION ★ 〉[ʜ] Audio: Adamsa123 》– 🤍 – 〉[ʢ] Audio: Adamsa123 》– 🤍 – 〉[ɰ] Audio: Peter Isotalo 》– 🤍 – 〉Japanese Teacher from the South: Brandon McInnis 》– 🤍 – 〉Sinking Danish Car: – 🤍 – ★ OTHER MEDIA ★ 〉Ko-Fi: – 🤍 – 〉PayPal: – 🤍 – 〉Tumblr: – 🤍 – 〉Twitter: – 🤍 – ★ DISCLAIMER ★ I own nothing but my voice.

Weird Phonemes - pronouncing the world's rarest sounds

Human languages have some strange sounds. Can you pronounce the world's rarest ones? Join me for some language show-and-tell before we get back to more linguistic tales next year. Subscribe for language: 🤍 Follow my progress or become a patron: 🤍 The World Atlas of Language Structures chapter that I'm building on: 🤍 ~ CORRECTIONS ~ After saying "velar" in the pharyngeals section, you hear me make a sound that's actually a UVULAR fricative. - Thanks, Carl Bille! Redditer languagejones states that my /!/ is wrong, as I pronounced it by doing what some San scholars call "flopping". Take this into account if you're trying to reproduce the sound. I'm not sure how far off my pharyngeals were. Arabic speakers commented that they're not quite right. The linguistics gets complicated here, since some argue Arabic does not have "true" pharyngeals, in which case I could be doubly wrong! Best to do a bit more digging if you're trying to master either (1) the Arabic epiglottals or (2) a language with pharyngeals. ~ Overview (SPOILER FREE!) ~ I went looking for the oddest speech sounds. That's what happens when you give language nerds free time. I didn't have to go far, since WALS.info had a good start with its chapter on uncommon consonants. WALS is a resource many in this community are already familiar with, but I recommend it if you aren't. So, what kinds of sounds tend NOT to occur in the world's languages? Which languages have them? Ooh, and although most of them are found in lesser known languages, which ones happen to be used in English? WATCH FOR ALL ANSWERS! You can also read the WALS chapter for info and stats. But I've scrounged up even more, some of which are rarer than the consonant places/manners of articulation in their post. ~ CREDITS ~ Art, animation and narration by Josh from NativLang. WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING PLACE YOU'VE TAUGHT? - That would be a one-to-one in a young Italian man’s flat in southern Italy. When he invited me to teach him at his home, I stupidly thought that Mamma would be there cooking the lunch, but no, it was a bachelor pad and no sign of Mamma! I eventually left having learned more about Italian customs than he had learned English! BEST TEACHING MOMENT? - One of my greatest achievement was when a couple of very naughty teenage Belgian students were sent here to England to learn English. They had been expelled from several schools in their own country and this was their last chance to prove themselves. After a few months of playing around in different levels, and coming close to being expelled again, they eventually ended up in my FCE class. Now they had two chances – respect their teacher and learn something or go back to Belgium. Well, they did go back to Belgium but not before they had passed their FCE! They became my two favourite students of all time. I love a challenge! HOW MANY STUDENTS HAVE YOU TAUGHT? Over 10 thousand WHAT'S YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING TEACHER MOMENT? - It happened during a DELTA observed lesson. One of my students happened to suffer from Tourette’s syndrome. Of course, I had no reason to worry, I had mentioned the fact in my lesson plan, and anyway, this student had never caused a problem before. However, today was different. Very different. Upon eliciting the required information from him – not wanting to leave him out – instead of answering the question in his usual fashion, he suddenly exhumed a torrent of swear words from somewhere deep within himself. After this cathartic experience he looked very pleased with himself but, unfortunately, this was not really the answer I was looking for. Everything went quiet, I looked over at the examiner who looked rather shocked. It certainly wasn’t your run-of-the-mill DELTA exam! BUT I passed! HOW CAN YOU CONTACT ME?
