How Germany got stuck paying for Russia's war. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has sanctioned much of Russia’s economy, but Russia’s natural gas trade remains untouched. The EU gets nearly a quarter of its energy from natural gas, and almost half of that comes from Russia, the world’s largest gas exporter. As the EU’s largest economy, Germany is Russia’s biggest customer, paying Russia’s state-owned gas company 200 million euros. So while Germany has even sent Ukraine weapons, in a historic shift of military policy, through its gas supply Germany is helping to pay for the war it’s trying to stop. It’s inherently hard to pivot away from piped gas. Unlike oil and coal, which can be rerouted, gas pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and physically connect producer and buyer directly, making them long-term commitments. That was the origin of Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and over time it’s only deepened. Today, as the world tries to punish Russia through sanctions, that dependence is getting in the way. President Vladimir Putin on Friday lauded Russia's natural gas giant, vowing that Gazprom would thrive despite attempts by the West to hinder it's business prospects as demand for gas would rise in Asia. Since Putin sent troops into Ukraine, the world's largest natural gas company has grappled with sharply lower gas sales to Europe as the West seeks to reduce dependence on Russian energy and reduce Russian budget revenues. Gazprom, which holds about 15 per cent of global reserves and employs about 490,000 people, is one of Russia's most powerful companies - so powerful it was once known as a state within the state. "Despite unfair – to put it bluntly – competition, direct attempts from the outside to hinder and restrain its development, Gazprom is moving forward, launching new projects," Putin told CEO Alexei Miller. "In the so-called transition period, the demand will be enormous. Moreover, more than half of this increase will fall on the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, first of all, of course, on the People's Republic of China, bearing in mind the growth rates of its economy." In a bid to reduce their dependence on Russian gas, European countries are looking at Azerbaijan to boost their natural gas imports. Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia agreed to boost the transfer of natural gas from Azerbaijan on April 25. The European countries will be using the existing infrastructure, which were until recently highly dependent on Russian energy. The agreement is expected to bring bigger and more secure gas supplies to many more countries in Europe. However, some analysts believe that these opportunities can also come with risks for Europe. President Vladimir Putin has inaugurated a new natural gas field in eastern Siberia that will allow Russia to increase its exports to China. The Kremlin hopes to augment gas sales as its European trading partners divest themselves from Russian energy. Moscow wants to boost gas sales to China. Gas income is critical to the Kremlin, to bankroll Putin’s war against Ukraine. But, until now Russia has had very little infrastructure to pump gas eastwards. Now Putin has announced the development of what he said would become the largest gas field in Eastern Siberia, plus the infrastructure to export the gas.
