Using an iPad as my primary device for coding wasn't something I thought possible until I tried it. There are a number of different ways you can use a tablet as a software development device, including things like coding apps and remote desktop. Since I have a computer, laptop and tablet for website development, I found coding and swapping devices sort of difficult especially with the fact that most environments require me to sync github in order to get back to coding my so important HTML, CSS and JS. So picking one device to use only, the iPad meant I tried to test out different methods for programming, and I enjoyed remote desktop the most. I technically could use a single environment with all the benefits of a super computer, but on an iPad. I used JumpDesktop to do this as teamviewer wasn't as effective. Can code reliably on ipad pro with the m1 silicon chip? What are the best workflows for software development? I'm glad you asked because here are the 3 best ways to do front end coding on an ipad pro. Even though I focus on front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JS), the apps and workflows I share would work with a lot of backend development projects too. My goal is to find the simplest and most effective ways to set up an environment to develop react.js applications on an ipad. Not only is coding on an ipad pro doable, it was a much better programming experience than I expected. That said, I don't plan to give up my m1 macbook pro anytime soon. The ipad pro could handle software development in a pinch, but I would not want to have it be my main tool for code. NOTICE: Looks like play.js changed their name to CodeSandbox 1 Month Later... VS Code on my Phone for Website Dev... (How I did it) I setup VS Code on my mobile phone and started developing websites. This is entirely possible to do from any location, on any devices such as an iPhone, iPad, Android or tables. Using vscode on any devices requires it to be accessible on the browser. To do this, we use a package called code-server. This allows us to access our physical machine remotely via the web, which VS Code will be running on. Since VS Code works on Electron, it's not normally accessible on platforms outside of a desktop. However, this solution allows you to perform web dev through the browser. This setup can also be done through workspaces, or even through your own cloud server via Amazon or Google Cloud platform. If you're a web developer, you should definitely give this a go. Be aware that security is a must for this implementation, as it does mean that your system is accessible remotely, so use SSL, have passwords, etc. Code Server can be found here on github: 🤍 #vscode #website #development Learn Design for Developers! I’m going to show you how you can code on your iPad in three different ways. For two of these methods, you can code on any iPad model that you have. That means that you can code on your normal iPad 8th generation, iPad 7th generation, iPad mini, iPad air (2019, 2020, 2021), and your iPad pro. For one of these methods, however you need to have an iPad Air (2020) or an iPad Pro. This is because you need a USB-C port to do so, and only the iPad Air 2020 and the iPad Pro 11 inch and 12.9 inch have that USB-C port. Interested in career consulting? 🤍 Download my resume template that got me a job and interview at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, and more: 🤍 Termius or mosh app on ipad The first option is using an SSH app like Termius or Mosh. This allows your iPad to have access to a full-blown terminal, but it does require you to have a remote server somewhere else already set up to use it. It lets you SSH into the remote server and basically do any type of coding that you normally would already do via the terminal. I actually had to use this strategy for almost an entire quarter at college because someone sat on my Macbook Pro and ruined the screen, so my school gave me a remote server to use and I had to SSH into it and code all of my assignments using vim. Luckily it wasn’t a full-stack web development course or anything, so I was able to do everything via my terminal. You should be able to code on any iPad using these apps, this so it doesn’t matter if you have an iPad mini, 10.2” iPad, iPad Air, or the iPad Pro. Replit Next up is Replit which is a really cool startup that allows you to code on your internet browser and since iPads have internet browsers built into them, it let’s you code directly from your iPad browser. Replit is essentially an online IDE that provides full support for a ton of different languages and technologies out there. It’s not a complete development environment for the hardcore coders out there, but it is more than enough if you’re someone who is just starting to learn programming for the first time because setting up your computer to download the right languages and versions of software is incredibly annoying, especially when you’re a beginner that doesn’t really know how everything works. Replit handles all of that for you, so I highly recommend that if you’re someone who is just starting out to code to use Replit to code on your iPad as it is more than powerful enough for basic learning tools. It doesn’t matter what iPad version you have (iPad mini, iPad 10.2 inch, iPad Air, or iPad Pro). You can code on your iPad using Replit. Raspberry Pi The most powerful way to code on your iPad is by connecting a Raspberry Pi 4 to your iPad. Unfortunately for this solution, your iPad needs to have a usb-c connection so you can only connect your Raspberry Pi 4 to an iPad Air 2020 or an iPad Pro 11” or iPad Pro 12.9” (3rd generation or later). For those of you who don’t know, a Raspberry Pi is basically a mini computer that runs Raspbian, a linux distribution built specifically for the Raspberry Pi (but you can technically install any linux distribution you want). The reason why you need an iPad Air 2020 or an iPad Pro 11” or iPad Pro 12.9” (3rd generation or later) and a Raspberry Pi 4 is so that you can power the Raspberry Pi 4 via the USB-c port in your iPad Air 2020 or an iPad Pro 11” or iPad Pro 12.9” (3rd generation or later). To set this up, you need to follow the instructions on this website: 🤍 Essentially you are modifying the Raspberry Pi to use the USB-C connection with your USB-C enabled iPad as the WiFi connection so that even though your Raspberry Pi is not connected to a WiFi network, it can use your iPad’s internet connection as the internet connection instead. This then also lets you remotely use your Raspberry Pi 4 via your iPad. There are numerous ways that you can then code via your Raspberry Pi 4 connected to your iPad. You can simply SSH into it (using either Termius/Mosh like I listed earlier in the list), or remotely login to your Raspberry Pi via a remote desktop app like Jump Desktop (my personal favorite, details as to why it’s my favorite can be found here: 🤍 or VNC Viewer (free but not as fully powered as Jump Desktop). This lets you use your iPad as the monitor for your Raspberry Pi 4 so you have a COMPLETE linux development environment on your iPad so there are zero limits as to what you want to do while programming as it is a fully powered computer that your iPad is connected to on the Raspberry Pi 4. Now, the connection isn’t perfect and can certainly get a bit laggy at some times, but it’s definitely more than great to work with.
